They are used in the same way as donor tissues and organs. Only in case of stem cells the donor is not a stranger but the Patient himself. If it so happens, that transplant of stem cells is needed by close relative, then the cells from umbilical blood will most probably suit him, which will save him from waiting for a compatible donor.
